The FATHER Behind Every Good Father

Today we’re not just celebrating earthly fathers. We’re going to look at the perfect Father — the one every good dad on earth is just a shadow of.

A good father always points to a better Father.

Ephesians 3:14-15 (ESV)

For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,

Every good father on earth is a dim reflection of Him. Today we look at the original.

What does a good father actually do?

POINT #1: A Good Father Provides

He meets your needs

Matthew 7:9-11 (ESV)

9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Philippians 4:19 (ESV)

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

James 1:17 (NIV 1984)

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

What need are you carrying right now that you haven’t laid at His feet? He’s not annoyed by your need. He’s waiting for you to ask.

POINT #2: A Good Father Protects

He covers you

Psalm 91:1-4 (NIV)

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

3 Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

The safest place in the world isn’t a location—it’s the presence of God. God’s presence is often His greatest protection.

Romans 8:38 (NLT)

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.

Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

Protection isn’t just physical — it’s identity.

Protection isn’t the absence of storms— it’s the presence of a Father.

You are covered. You are claimed. You belong to Him. Whatever you’re facing this week — you don’t face it alone.

Point #3: A Good Father Corrects with Love

He Disciplines because He cares

Proverbs 3:11-12 (NLT)

My child, don’t reject the LORD’s discipline, and don’t be upset when he corrects you. For the LORD corrects those he loves, just as a father corrects a child in whom he delights.

Revelation 3:19 (NIV)

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.

Hebrews 12:5-11 (NLT)

5 And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said,

“My child, don’t make light of the LORD’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you.

6 For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”

7 As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father?

8 If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.

9 Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?

10 For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness.

11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way.

Disciplines (paideuō) = train up a child; educate; instruct.

Punishes (mastigoō) = to chastise; to scourge (whip, instrument of punishment)

Discipline that does not produce godliness misses God’s purpose.

Biblical discipline is not about controlling behavior; it’s about shaping character.

Correction is not rejection. Correction is proof of relationship.

If you’re in a hard season right now, before you conclude that God is distant or angry — ask yourself: could He be developing something in me that comfort never could?

Point #4: A Good Father Never Abandons

He stays

Deuteronomy 31:6 (ESV)

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.

Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Be careful not to teach your kids— whether intentional or not— to depend more on money than God.

Psalm 139:7-10 (ESV)

7 Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?

8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!

9 If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

10 even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.

No matter how far you’ve wandered — by choice or by circumstance — His light has never gone out for you. He has not moved.

CONCLUSION

The greatest tragedy is not having an imperfect earthly father. The greatest tragedy is living like you don’t have a perfect Heavenly Father.

Your earthly father may have failed you. But your Heavenly Father never has. And He never will.

Romans 8:15-16 (NLT)

So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.” For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.
