HOUSE RULES PT 4: Order In The House

WEEK 4   ·   SERMON NOTES

ORDER IN THE HOUSE

1 Timothy 2:9–15

BIG IDEA

Order in God’s house must look like the character of the Lord of the house.

SERIES QUESTION

What does a healthy church family look like — and what threatens it?

ANCHOR VERSE · 1 TIMOTHY 3:15

“…you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.”

THIS WEEK’S PASSAGE

1 TIMOTHY 2:9–15   ESV

9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.

15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

BEFORE WE BEGIN

▪ “All Scripture is __________ __________ by God and profitable…” (2 Timothy 3:16–17). “All” includes 1 Timothy chapter two.

▪ Verse 9 opens with “likewise” — Paul hasn’t changed the subject. When this church gathers, the __________ must be visible.

▪ Order in God’s house is not a pecking order. It is the kind of order that makes a house __________ — the kind that makes sure everybody at the table actually gets __________.

MOVEMENT 1   ·   vv. 9–10

WEAR WHAT MATTERS

In God’s house, worth is not worn. It is __________.

▪ Ephesus ran on status. You could read a woman’s __________ from across the street — gold in her hair, pearls, costly clothes.

▪ The problem Paul is naming is not hemlines. It is __________.

▪ “Respectable apparel” (kosmios) means what is __________ and fitting. At the foot of the cross, nobody __________ anybody.

▪ Sōphrosynē — self-control, a sound mind — is not a women’s-only virtue. Paul requires it of every __________ (1 Tim 3:2).

▪ Paul doesn’t leave anyone undressed. It’s not about being stripped; it’s about being __________ — in good works (Eph 2:10).

▪ Men, don’t relax: in James 2, the one wearing the gold ring is a __________. Status display is a __________ problem.

THIS WEEK’S LINE

In this house, your __________ __________ should be louder than your __________.

Come as you are. Leave the __________ at the door.

MOVEMENT 2   ·   v. 11

MAKE ROOM AT THE TABLE

Before Paul restricts anything, he __________ someone.

▪ The only command in verse 11 is: __________ (manthanetō). In that world, this was radical.

▪ “Quietly” (hēsychia) is the same word Paul used for the whole church in 2:2 — a settled, peaceable, __________ spirit. Not a gag order.

▪ “Submissiveness” (hypotagē), at minimum, is the posture of every learner: __________ the Word, not over it (James 1:19).

▪ Mary of Bethany sat at Jesus’ __________ — the posture of a student. Jesus said her place would not be __________ __________ from her (Luke 10:42).

▪ Timothy’s first Bible teachers were his grandmother __________ and his mother __________ (2 Tim 1:5).

▪ __________ and Aquila explained the way of God to Apollos (Acts 18:26). Older women are given a __________ assignment (Titus 2:3–4).

REMEMBER

Untaught people are __________ people. The answer to false teaching is never less teaching — it is __________ teaching.

A daughter of God does not have to __________ a seat at the feet of Jesus.

HANDLE HARD WORDS WITH HUMILITY

We can open a hard passage without closing our __________ to one another.

▪ Paul gives an instruction (v. 12) and two reasons, both from __________: Adam was __________ first (Gen 2:7), and the woman was deceived (Gen 3:13).

▪ Paul is not saying women are gullible or Adam was innocent. In Romans 5:12, sin entered through one __________.

▪ “Exercise authority” (authenteō) appears only __________ in the New Testament. Paul’s usual word for authority (exousia) is not used here.

THIS WEEK

CHECK THE LABEL · OPEN THE BOOK · KEEP THE PEACE

☐  CHECK THE LABEL

Name one thing you wear, drive, carry, or post that is really about rank. Ask the Lord about it. Then do one good work nobody will ever see (Matt 6:3–4).

What I’ll lay down:  ______________________________

☐  OPEN THE BOOK

Every one of us is a learner in this house. Open the Bible at your kitchen table this week with your daughters and your sons — the way Lois and Eunice taught Timothy.

When, and with whom:  ______________________________

☐  KEEP THE PEACE

Name one person you respect who reads this passage differently than you do. If you talk about it, listen before you answer (Rom 14:19).

Their name:  ______________________________

☐  KEEP PRAYING YOUR TWO NAMES

From Week 3 — every day. We are not done.

THE CHARGE · THIS WEEK’S ANSWER TO THE SERIES QUESTION

A healthy family puts good works ahead of rank, makes room for every son and daughter to learn, handles hard words with open Bibles and humble hearts, and rests its hope on Christ.

What threatens it is using this passage to diminish people, or letting a disagreement tear apart the house.
