AGAINST THE CURRENT — Fear

Luke 22:39-44 (ESV)

39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

  • Agony = extreme and generally prolonged pain; intense physical or mental suffering; the struggle preceding natural death; a violent struggle.
  • Agony in Greek = ἀγωνία agonía = a struggle; anguish; great fear, great affliction.

Three Points About Jesus Experiencing Fear:

#1) JESUS UNDERSTANDS

Hebrews 4:15-16 (NLT)

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

Every time you make a decision based on fear, it will never be conformed to His will.

Matthew 11:29 (NLT)

Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

#2) JESUS KNOWS

Matthew 6:34 (NLT)

“So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.

#3) JESUS CONFRONTED

Luke 4:13 (Voice)

The devil had no more temptations to offer that day, so he left Jesus, preparing to return at some other opportune time.

2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

Hebrews 2:14-15 (NLT)

Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

  • All fears are connected with the fear of dying.

Fear is a prophetic spirit of hell that instills a negative outlook on our future and compels us to make decisions driven by fear, which God will not honor.

Faith is a gift from the spirit of God that provides us with a positive outlook on our future, inspiring us to make decisions based on faith, which God will honor.

Faith gives you courage. Fear gives you cowardliness.

Fear is waiting for the devil to move. Faith is waiting for God to move.

Romans 3:17-18 (NLT)

They don’t know where to find peace.” “They have no fear of God at all.”

Jesus reigns with peace.  The devil reigns with fear.

CONCLUSION:

How can you overcome fear?

#1) ADMIT YOUR FEAR

#2) SUBMIT YOUR FEAR

#3) FOCUS ON HIS PRESENCE & HIS LOVE

Numbers 13:30 Voice

But Caleb calmed the congregation, and he spoke to Moses.

Caleb: “We should go straight in, right away, and take it over. We are surely able!”

Psalm 23:4 (NLT)

Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.

Psalm 16:8-11 (NLT)

I know the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me. No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice. My body rests in safety. For you will not leave my soul among the dead or allow your holy one to rot in the grave. You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Fear is reality without God. Faith is reality with God.

Hebrews 1:14 (NLT)

Therefore, angels are only servants—spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation.

  • JESUS UNDERSTANDS YOUR WORRIES. JESUS KNOWS WHAT IT IS TO FEAR. JESUS CONFRONTED FEAR SO YOU CAN OBTAIN THE VICTORY.
  • We don’t need to fear but have faith in Him.
