Sound doctrine is not the finish line. ______________ is. Truth that does not produce love has been handled wrongly.

What does a healthy church family look like — and what threatens it?   (Anchor text: 1 Timothy 3:14–15)

#1) THE SOURCE OF TRUTH vv. 1–2

Truth comes from ______________.

• “By command” — epitagē. Not a request. Paul establishes whose ______________ stands behind the instruction.
• God our Savior · Christ Jesus our hope: the One with the right to tell you how to live is the same One who ______________ to get you in the door.
• “My true child” — gnēsios. Household language is here before chapter three names it: Father, Savior, son.
• Grace, ______________, and peace. Paul adds a word — because instruction comes with provision for our failures.

#2) THE FIGHT FOR TRUTH vv. 3–4

Truth is worth ______________.

• “Remain at Ephesus.” Stay. Confront it. Timothy’s hardest assignment was to not leave.
• It never sounds like heresy. It arrives sounding almost ______________. (Acts 20:29–30 — “from among your own selves”)
• Myths and endless genealogies — fascinating, and going nowhere. Paul contrasts speculation with oikonomia, the way God’s ______________ is run.
• Paul’s test is not “Is this interesting?” but “What is this ______________ in me?”

#3) THE FRUIT OF TRUTH vv. 5–7

Truth must produce ______________.

“The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.”  (1 Timothy 1:5)

• The aim — telos. The finish line, not a side effect.
• A pure ______________ — motive. Am I after their good, or after being seen as right?
• A good ______________ — integrity. Is my private life anywhere near my public position?
• A sincere ______________ — anypokritos, “un-acted.” Faith with no mask on.
• Nobody announces they are drifting. Swerving · wandering · vain discussion. Confidence is not ______________, and it deceives its holder first.

#4) THE FREEDOM OF TRUTH vv. 8–11

Truth leads us to ______________.

• “The law is good, if one uses it lawfully.” nomos / nomimōs. The problem is never the blade — it is the hand that holds it.
• A surgeon and a butcher both hold a knife. Same tool, different ______________.
• “Sound doctrine” — hygiainousa didaskalia. Not primarily accurate; ______________. Doctrine is food and medicine, not a filing cabinet.
• The vice list of vv. 9–10 is not a wall to stand behind. It is a ______________ — every category on it names a person Christ came to save.
• Paul put his own name at the top of the list: “of whom I am the foremost.” (1 Timothy 1:15)
• The law names the ______________; the gospel names the ______________.

The whole movement: the law exposes our sin, the law sends us to Christ, and Christ produces the love the law was after all along.  (Romans 13:10)

THREE THINGS I AM ASKING OF THIS HOUSE

1. Run the diagnostic. Not on the church down the road — on you. What is your Bible knowledge producing? If it produces patience, it is healthy. If it produces contempt, something has gone wrong in the handling.
2. Repair the relationship. Think of the argument you won. Go back to that person this week — a text, a call, a cup of coffee — for their sake, not for the record. You can be right and still owe somebody something.
3. Come into the house. You cannot learn house rules from the driveway. Be here on Sundays, join a Life Group or the Wednesday study, and take the family devotional home.

FOR THE WEEK  ·  PERSONAL & LIFE GROUP

• What has my Bible knowledge actually produced in me — patience, or sharpness? How do I handle people who are wrong?
• Where have I been more interested in being right than in being loving? Who is that person, and what do I owe them?
• Have I been reading the list in vv. 9–10 as a wall, with me outside it? What changes if it is a door?
• Which of the three — pure heart, good conscience, sincere faith — is God putting His finger on this week?
