PART 2: THE DENIAL

Matthew 18:28–31 (NKJV)

“But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’ So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’ And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done.”

POINT 1: DON’T WEAPONIZE TRUTH  (Matthew 18:28)

“But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, ‘Pay me what you owe!’”

• The same day he was forgiven, he grabbed someone by the throat.
• Greek epnigen (ἐπνίγεν) — “choked / throttled.” This is violence, not a business meeting.
• He technically followed Matthew 18:15 — went directly to the person, named the issue plainly.

You can be procedurally correct and spiritually cruel at the same time.

• Illustration: a scalpel heals in the right hands and kills in the wrong hands. The 7 C’s are a scalpel — the heart holding them decides whether they heal or wound.

When I confront someone, am I hoping for ____________________ or hoping to win?

Matthew 7:2 (ESV) — “For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”

POINT 2: HEAR THE ECHO  (Matthew 18:29)

“So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.’”

• This is the identical plea he himself prayed to the king in verse 26 — word-for-word in the Greek (makrothymēson ep’ emoi, kai panta apodōsō soi).
• He is hearing his own prayer, in his own words, coming out of someone else’s mouth — and it doesn’t register.

Unforgiveness makes us deaf to our own testimony.

• Illustration: hearing a recording of your own voice and not recognizing it — that’s what’s happening to this servant.

Matthew 5:7 (ESV) – “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.”

What plea have I heard recently that sounded like one I once prayed to God? ____________________

POINT 3: RELEASE THE DEBT  (Matthew 18:30–31)

“And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done.”

• “He would not” — a decision, made with a clear head, not an inability.
• 100 denarii ≈ about 4 months’ wages. 10,000 talents (last week) ≈ about 60 million days of labor.

The ratio: roughly 600,000 to one. Remember the size of the mountain you were forgiven before you measure someone else’s molehill.

• The other servants were “very grieved” (elypēthēsan sphodra) and took it to the king — that’s the body of Christ working the way it’s supposed to.

James 2:13 (ESV) — “For judgment is without mercy to one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.”

CLOSING: DON’T LET IT FALL ON DEAF EARS

Somewhere in this room there’s a name. A face. Somebody who owes you something. And you have decided — maybe without saying it out loud — that they’re going to pay it.

Luke 6:36 (ESV) — “Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.”

Mercy doesn’t keep score.

Reflect: What is the Holy Spirit telling you through this message right now?
